
How do you spread the word about important health benefits?
Blue Shield of California wanted to help members understand the importance of preventative care visits and make sure they knew what preventative services were included at no additional cost. Sifting through a thick booklet wasn’t working, so Blue Shield hoped to upgrade to something interactive and easy-to-follow.

After sifting through long checklists and less-than-obvious materials, we wanted to design a friendly, easy-to-follow and instantly helpful experience. Knowing there was a better solution than a brochure, we proposed an interactive tool that would be accessible to everyone, provide a personal user experience and be eminently shareable on social media.


We wire-framed a simple and informative user-determined journey, so no matter your demographic (20-49? Female? Pregnant?), you can get the medically-relevant details you need without superfluous distractions.


Next, we created a visual landscape for the site, both utilizing and stretching the Blue Shield of California brand. Because healthcare can be intimidating, we emphasized warmth and playful elements to improve engagement—such as an adorable beating heart icon and some well-deserved “Congratulations!” if you are, in fact, expecting. Yes, the website may make you say “awww.”


In addition to spreading the word that preventive care is free and available, the site delivers tools a patient can use to take charge of his or her own health, including a handy and personalized printable checklist of questions to discuss with your doctor.

How it all turned out
We designed a user-friendly site that encourages exploration. Members can learn about benefits and can even build a personalized list of immunizations and topics to discuss with their doctors. Blue Shield was very pleased with the results and received positive feedback about how engaging and simple-to-use the site is from much-more-informed members.
